I've been playing around with this feature, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere trophy-wise
 Sometimes it will deploy 2 small groups near the TH, other times it will just do the normal spread around the base. So you win maybe 5 battles & get 1 star each(2 if you're lucky), then lose 1-2 battles, and you're back to where you started. Is it because there are buildings where it tries to spawn the TH troops?
